Looking for odd Framing Square
Looking for odd Framing Square (post #122559)
JonE on Tue, 10/26/2004 - 00:28
Tried many places, no luck, even at old tool dealers and various places on the Whirled Wide Web.
Once upon a time, Satanley made a framing square with a 24" long leg and 18" (NOT 16") short leg. The only ones I've ever seen are in the hands of timber framers, who claim they are indispensable.
Does anybody have one of these or know where one might be, that they would part with for a reasonable price?

For what purpose do you need the 18"? Occasionally I've wished for a longer blade...as well as a longer body...but wouldn't have walked to the truck for either use.

That is because timber framers frame on 18 inch centers.

If it turns out to be a boatbuilding or shipbuilding square I would try Jamestown Distributors they handle boat building stuff, google em.

Hi,
My local guy also sells on the 'net - he has 2 models of what you are looking for. Go to www.tools-plus.com and search on "square".
Enjoy!

Not likely, considering what I'm looking for is an antique. If I wanted a plain ol' rafter square I'd head down to Home Despot and grab one. Specifically, the short leg is 18", not 16", which is all you can find in the tools section these days.

Could you have a machine shop make one up for you?
