Which type of random orbital sander do you prefer, one with a hook and loop or self stick sanding sheet? And of course, why.
Thanks
Jim

There's a constant source of clean water for you to use, and all you have to do is collect it.

Once again we need to tell the rookies to check the archives...this has been discussed before! Oh wait...it's not a rookie...it's an editor.
H&L because I usually change paper to a smaller grit before the paper is worn out. And used paper can be used to hand sand, but if it's sticky back then it's inconvenient to use.
Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt

yeah, just an editor with a back load of articles and not enough spare time to spend on BT. Thanks!

Ed, He's both!
A rookie editor!
If you sand enough that the paper is shot when you change it then get PSA (cheaper)
But if you need to change grits before the paper is dead then get H&L.

Hook and loop's are easier to align with the port holes.

Both... They each have their place....
Sanding a lot in one grit - PSA.
A lot of grit changes - H&L
Now forward the check for the supplied information for the new articale...
Here fishy fishy....
I'll be different ...
I like my PC Speedblock ...(think that's what it's called)
and I like the fact it uses squares of regular sand paper sheets ....
does everything from hogging out the rough stuff to a swirl free high grit finish.

H&L - but probably not for any of the reasons listed. First RO I got was H&L, and where I was geographically at the time, I don't recall sticky even being on the shelf. Just stuck with it, no pun intended. But the point about changing the paper out - one of those valid things that never really crossed my mind.
I gotta agree with JB too. Speedblock is a dandy sander. I also cart around a belt, a 1/3 and a 1/2 sheet, and just added a Festo to the arsenal. What do you call their "stickfix" pads - not really velcro, not really sticky . . . hybrid?

IMERC summed it up in post 9. I have hook and loop and PSA backer pads in both 8 hole and 5 hole that I just switch out with three screws depending on what kind of work I am doing.
Glad he didn't ask what the over all preference was....
1/4 pad orbital, 1/3 or 1/2 sheet inlines with regular paper to fit the job cause it seems to me that the ROS's raise the grain.
Other wise I have both types of ROS's with after market pads in 5 and 6 inch.
Jim make sure you get that check gets on it's way....

It's interesting to me to read that many of you are using half-sheet sanders. I have used random orbits a lot, and I have a couple in my school shop. I picked up a speed block a while ago, and it is now my favorite. Relatively quiet, easy on the hands, paper is cheap and it leaves a great surface.
I was thinking about getting a half sheet sander, as I have a couple of pieces I need to make this Spring/Summer with large flat surfaces. Is there any advantage to using a random orbit over a half sheet/ speed block? I've read that the scratch pattern is more random, but I sure have no complaints about my PC.
I've been wishing FHB or FWW would do a review of sanders. They haven't for many years, and there are LOTS of new models.
Let's hear from you half sheet users...

I've run both types (H&L and PSA) against each other in a production shop where we did a lot of sanding (shutters).....H&L by a landslide for me.....better job by far, and the hassle of velcro wearing out is much less than the hassle of keeping PSA pads clean, or having disks go flinging off. The only way I would begin to justify PSA is if you keep sanders dedicated to one grit....even then (and I've done that), you don't get as good a job as with H&L.

It seems to me that a ROS leaves a raised grain profile...Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
