I've seen this device before that is used to hold 4x4 posts vertical temporarily.  It has 3 legs and costs about $100 IIRC.

 
My Google-Fu is weak at the moment and I can't find it.  I've seen it advertized and I've seen it at the JLC shows.  Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I think you are talking about a Cepco Post-Pod, available from McFeely's.
