Do it.
We did a couple of years ago. Hard to imagine living without it now. (Our area has 3 top 40 rock/pop stations and 3 more top 40 country stations, plus 1 unimaginative NPR station)

I've got an xm roady. Amuse the wife as I move it from truck to car to home. In other words, I'm hooked.
Fairly easy to hook to amp at home. Don't know about boombox unless you the standard stereo (left and right) connections. They've got newer stuff out now, too. Worth taking a look at. And if the boombox has any sort of input you can cobble something together from Radio Shack.
By the way, although it's commercial free on the music channels, I find it has one downside. My xm doesn't like really thick trees. Or being at the north end of the house -- the satellite is to the south.
XM is pretty good. You won't be sorry.
One guy I worked with had a low power FM transmitter and he broadcast the XM signal on an unused FM band so that everyone on the job could listen.
The newer Dewalt radios have an AUX IN mode and you could connect your satellite receiver right to it. Gotta keep the unit within sight of the southern sky, though.
You won't regret having satellite radio.
Sirius has a little better coverage (more satellites). Otherwise, 6/half doz.
The heck, you say?
Have you considered an iPod or similar? I have Sirius, internet radio and another satellite service. There are some genera that are not available. I've found most stations just repeat a limited number of offerings. You can hook up an iPod to most radios with a CD input, fill it with the stuff you like, change as you want and take it wherever you go.
Beat it to fit Paint it to match
I bought the Delphi MyFi XM2Go at Best Buy about 3 weeks ago. Every accessory you could need comes in the box including various car mounts (and power cord), a home docking kit, and a belt clip if you wanted to use it while jogging or whatever. It uses a built-in FM modulator to transmit to any radio (you pick one of 12 pre-programmed frequencies) or you can listen through headphones. It can also be hardwired to a vehicle. Subscibing to XM also gives you access to listening to XM Radio on the internet. Having high speed internet at work and at home allows me listen to it almost wherever I am. If I remember right, you can do a trial subsciption (want to say about $8 for a month) to the online version to see if you like the service enough to buy a receiver and sign up for the full service. Hope this helps.
Got the boom box for the job site. Got the car unit for the work truck. Wired up a car unit on my motorcycle. Great stuff. Really glad we did it. I got it a couple of years ago and the initial car unit and boom box, reciever etc was less than $200. Then the $10 monthly fee is it. DanT
