I have house with an unfinished basement, the stairwell leading to the basement is U shaped and the landing at the end of the first flight of steps is against an outside wall. About half of this wall is poured concrete which I have coated with DryLok.
I would like to finish/insulate this wall, however there is only 36″ from the last stair tread to the wall so any build out would cut into turning space(for future furniture, etc).
I have been considering adding concrete backer board and then putting some type of smoothing compound over it, however this would do nothing for the R value. I’ve also considered gluing and screwing some type of styrofoam board and paneling over it
Any suggestions regarding how to finish this without taking up too much space would be welcomed.
Thanks in advance!

I saw a case where a wall much like this was covered with the same carpet used on the basement floor. It worked quite well!

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that, carpet should protect against dents and scratches.
IID, code here allows for a projection of I think 2" into the stair space, below handrail height.
You could glue some 1" foam and panelling of some sort onto the concrete, and gain at least a little insulation value.

Thanks for the idea.
