From not venting your bathroom to not venting your siding, understanding how things go wrong is the first step to getting them right.

ND,
I found an interesting site - http://www.split-level.com - that has a free, downloadable book called Split Visions: A planbook of remodeling ideas for split-level and split-entry houses. You can be the judge of whether they are successful in updating the look of split-level homes.
Another interesting thing about the site is that it asks these questions: what do you like about your split-level home? what do you dislike about your split-level home? what would you like to change about your split-level home? When you click through on the questions (right on the home page) you get to hundreds of postings where people discuss their split-level houses & what they've done to update them.
Hope you find it useful.
Anne
Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Knew there had to be some options to improving these homes. Heading to the web site ASAP!
I know that Sarah Susanka has addressed this issue of the split level in one of her Not So Big House series. I believe that it is in the first book of the same name. It was interesting as you can expect from her work.
OH?
Thank you - will have to scope that one out. If you recall - was it an extensive article?
I found the book for you and it was discussed in her second book, Creating the Not So Big House. However, I found that the special issues of it being a split level was glanced over, so I don't think that you will find a specific solution there. However, I still suggest that you read her books as they will challenge you to think differently about your own house and you will come up with your own solutions more easily.
Yes - sort of came to the same conclusion. Checked her web site and looks like good reading. Guess you start with the first book first.
FYI We came up with some viable options on splitlevel.com.
Appears that 'there's hope out there' Wanting to create something we can live in for a LONG time and be comfortable thru retirement. Guess we're down to the entry STEP issue!
Sounds like you're well into the home process yourself - continued luck you!
