We are in the process of designing our new home and want to put in an elevator. Would appreciate comments on types and brands of elevators. Any other words of wisdom about installation and options that might be useful would also be appreciated. The reason for the elevator is that we plan to live on the top floor of a two storey house which also has a basement. We are in 60’s and pretty active but….

Consider having a bathroom on each floor in case the power goes out for a few hours.
I think you missed the poster's point. If they get into an accident and cannot climb up/down stairs they may still wish to use space on those floors, and not just for the bathroom. I've got a friend that plans on having plenty of storage space in the basement as well as their formal home theater. If they find themselves wheelchair-bound they would rather not attempt to do wheelies on the staircase so they included an elevator in the design of their retirement home.
With the elevator they would be able to use all the floors. But if the elevator were inoperable for a few hours or days due to a power outage or a breakdown, it would be good to have a bathroom still available instead of having to use the stairs to get to one.
Not suggesting the elevator replace the bathroom, but rather just speculating on the need that some people have for them.
If you need an elevator installed, call Residential Elevators, ask for Bo and tell him I sent you.
