Can anyone help answer this question? We just had our 60 year old hardwood floor ripped up. It had been sanded too many times and could not be salvaged in our house renos. I heard that it’s best to add screws to the subfloor so that the new hardwood does not squeak. Does anyone know how close or far the screws need to be from each other? Does the flooring company do this? My husband wasnt to go around and do it himself but I’d rather get an expert’s opinion. Any help is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Find the floor joists, screw 2 1/2 in nails about every 6 - 8 inches. That should take care of ANY possible squeeks. Worst case scenario, place a new subfloor 3/4" plywood over top of the subfloor and scew that down instead of nailing. This would definitely take care of any possible concerns of the structural integrity of the existing subfloor. Especially after the old HW floor was torn up.

One more question, would the hardwood company do that as part of their service/quote? Or do we have to do it?
You could really save yourself a whole lot of money by doing it yourself. I think that if you ask the flooring contractor to do it he'll see $$$ before his eyes. SO give it some thought. If your budget allows such expenses, then have someone else do it. If your husband is at all handy, he'll be able to save some money to take you out to dinner!
Good Luck
