Hello,
I’ve laid quite a few HW floors in my time but mostly in new installations for new homes. I got spoiled doing this. I am faced with somewhat of a dilema now for my own home. I have an area about 10X13 that is Linoleum. I’d like to put a HW floor down because I can’t stand the linoleum anymore. My question(s) is has anyone ever had experience putting a HW floor over linoleum? Should I tear up the linoluem to get down to the subfloor and put new luan down? If I go over the linoleum, do I need to put tar or rosin paper down? If I don’t put the paper down is the floor more susceptible to squeeks? Any thoughts to this task would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Fred

Im not sure if you are still interested in an answer for this, but I figured I would bump it and you should get some takers, ask in Breaktime if no result.
Your question is loaded, so either way would work. One issue to consider is your final floor height. If you need to go down by all means do it. I usually remove the linoleum it comes out easy and its light. Only replace your subfloor if you have problems like it is uneven.
While thinking about it I figure the linoleum can be a good sound, moisture and squeak barrier and I dont think you need to add paper the nails will pin it and the linoleum will act like that layer.
Also a question for you, is the rosen paper for squeaks when you lay hardwood? I always thought they used that old school stuff to create a barrier so the dirt wouldnt go down to the next floor when the subfloor boards shrunk.
