This is my first time posting and I hope you can help me. My husband and I are going to build a second storey on our bungalow. It is extremely narrow (191/2 feet x 34 feet). We live in the city! We want to build out the back of the house too but this part will be narrower (12×20)as our drive way is in the back. Does anyone know where we can get ideas for narrow houses? All the floor plans on the net are for wider homes. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Source control, ventilation, and filtration are the keys to healthy indoor air quality. Dehumidification is important too.

The book A Pattern Language, by Alexander, Ishikawa, and Silverstein, recommends long thin houses. There's not much in the way of specific floor plans, but it does discuss the reasons you might want to design a house that way even if you weren't constrained by the lot.
I'd recommend seeing if you can find it at a library before deciding to buy a copy.
One option is to consider the noise and privacy level going in one direction, so, for example, the back of the house is the quietest, with the bedrooms.
I have seen magazines from time to time that feature homes for narrow lots. Keep your eye out for them in the larger magazine shops. Have you tried an internet search?
thank you all for your suggestions. I have checked the internet but our house is extremely narrow so it's tough to find. I will look for the book, thanks again
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I will look into all of them. I have spent countless hours on the internet but it's tough to find a design so narrow and long.
Now that I've reread your dimensions, maybe if we knew what you wanted up there it would help. Long and narrow begs for windows on the best view side or L and possibly a veranda or two. Where will your stairs be? What climate conditions are you expecting? Are you limited by roof style? If you are considering one large room, you can use rugs hanging from the ceiling or folding screens or floor-to-ceiling bookcases to delineate mini spaces. What a fun project!
Hi again
Ok, I'm attaching a layout of our house with the addition that will be on the back. Our house is the blue squares on this excel sheet. The only thing we are keeping is the stairs going down, the front door location and the living room in the front intact. Can ANYONE offer suggestions for a layout including 2piece bathroom, front hall closet. stairs up, a kitchen (with island) , dining and a great room (or another sitting area).
We are challenged because of the narrowness of the existing house plus the more narrow addition. We know we may have to sacrifice an eat in kitchen but we really want a great layout. Thanks everyone!
