Hi,
I hope someone out there can give me advice. I have a 12 x 16 kitchen. We have an “L” design with the cabinets and an island with a cooktop and an overhang for stools. The problem is that I have one long wall that is empty (the other side is the stairs leading to the basement) and I have one short wall that has a four-ft. opening to the family/dining room (this wall has heating ducts to the upstairs). Short of bumping out the other long wall that has a wall oven, a dishwasher, sink and other cabinetry, what can I possibly do to “open up” my kitchen or at the very least, make use of those two blank walls so I don’t feel that the space is “wasted”???
Any creative ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!

I'm not sure I picture your kitchen all that well. But here are a few ideas off the top of my head.
One is to construct a pantry in nearby space and get rid of your upper cabinets. I had a galley kitchen with no upper cabinets and it felt quite a bit more spacious without them.
Another is to use the space above the stairs. You could do a built in wall cabinet that hangs out over the stairs to the basement, but high enough that you have good head clearance going down the stairs. If it had glass in the doors it could add a sense of openness.
A mirror on the wall may help, too.
Thanks for the suggestion - the problem with the long wall with the staircase on the other side of it is that I also have an upstairs in that staircase as well.
I really can't picture in my mind what you have but you did mention stairs. Can this wall be opened up under the stairs and put some cabinets or walk-in there?
