Flared Roof Design
I am in the design stage of a new house and like the look of the "flared" roof design found on French inspired houses. Does anyone out there have a good way/detail to accomplish this? The roof will most likely be a 12/12 pitch, stick framed with 2X12's or engineered lumber?
Thanks

Attach tapered blocks to the tops of the rafters. You can make a curved flare if you like. Easier with board sheathing than with plywood or OSB.

Just so I can confirm, cut the "flairs" out of a 2X12's and attach to the tops of the rafters at the ends? And probably use plywood or OSB on either side to hold it in place? Sheath the top with 1X4's or bend sheet goods.
Thanks

A flare that would require a 2x12 is a bit more dramatic than anything I'm familiar with. The one in particular that I remember seeing pictures of (either in Fine Hombuilding or Countryside magazine) the blocks were 2x4, 2x6 at the very most.
Have you thought about how you're going to detail the eave with such high vertical ends on the rafter tails?
I think you should repeat your question at Breaktime (second button in the middle row of buttons above). A number of roof framers hang out there.
