gutter requirements

Hi All, Is it required by code to have rain gutters on a house? I can't seem to find any information in either the IRC or the IBC books. I have heard many opinions and naturally have my own about this subject, but do they need to be there by code? Any guidance to where I can find this info would be appreciated. BTW I live in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Thanks Ed

It would be a local code or (post #188341, reply #1 of 2)

It would be a local code or deed restriction or whatnot, not part of a national code.  You'll have to ask your local BI office, and maybe check with city hall for ordinances.  And of course if your any sort of "planned" development or such you have to check with THEIR people.

We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Nature's inexhaustible sources of energy -- sun, wind and tide. ... I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that. --Thomas Edison

good question- I would say (post #188341, reply #2 of 2)

good question- I would say no, they are not required.  We have done houses (in NY) with those rain handler sections that look like mini blind slats positioned in rows that disperse the water so it doesn't pour straight down.  Works ok and there is nothing to clean out.  Just make sure you have the drainage in place around the house to take the runoff.
