Need Help Determining a good flooring installer
Well folks I thought I would come to folks who deal with building and see if I can get some information for determining a good flooring installer.
1st I’m lookiing to replace all of the carpets in my 2000 sq ft single story dwelling. There are so many companies out there advertsing they are the best, I need some way to weed out the cons and get someone who is a pro. I plan on replacing the carpet with vynyl fooring that looks like wood. I live in the south where humidity is a problem and the house is built on a slab. From what I’ve read so far wood is not an option and have been concetrating on vynyl products.
Also, can some of you folks recomend a good product line (ex:pergo, etc).
I hope that I have provoded enough info to make the proper seletion on flooring and a good installer.
Your help is greatly apprerciated.
Thanks

A little more...........
Information please.
I don't live in the south, so won't dispense any answers but here's a question.
You mention putting down vinyl, then use Pergo as a product you might be interested in. Pergo only makes (to my knowledge) laminate floors. That's not vinyl.
I have seen some strip vinyl "wood" flooring. Some doesn't look half bad. There's also vinyls that imitate stone/ceramic.
One other thing, how dry is this slab?
That kind of thing most established businesses can do well, unless there's some unusal circumstance. Shop around and you'll find most outfits priced in the same general range, so go with the supplier who has the lines you want and "feels good". And of course ask neighbors and coworkers if they have any recent experience.
Stay away from the "Crazy Eddie's Carpet Warehouse" types that advertise late-night on (what used to be) UHF channels.
Installers.
Well, as far as vinyl/and the vinyl faux's I mentioned............I deal with primarily one store that has their own installers. They are good, clean, thorough, and don't cause me problems when they leave.
It takes time to find these installers and for me it was done by the carpet store I deal with. I'm not happy and they're not happy, I turn them business.
I have run into some Designers installers and they too have done my jobs well.
Watch out for the suppliers that use "subs" that come and go.
Best of luck.
Folks thanks for the info. I was refering to laminate floors. I didn't want to confuse folks that I was looking for laminated wood products. So sorry for the confusion.
Most of the foor places around here advertise they install laminante floors. I don't want a low ball but a group that will install properly without tearing up the house and screwing over the home owner. I was hoping that there were some tips to finding out a good one other that calling every flooring place and having them tell me they're the best in town. Is there some questions to ask that would weed out the bad ones?
Thanks
Like I said, mainly you want an established operation -- one that's been around for more than a few years. Often you can get a good deal from the new kid on the block who's "hungry", and sometimes you'll get good work. But you can't count on it.
Think about it this way: You want to choose the most boring outfit from among the bunch.
Well then, your search just got bigger. Many carpenters install laminate floors. While there are tricks, it's not terribly out of the realm of a good experienced carpenter. And at a good price too. What you don't want is a flooring guy that has no general finish experience-or you'll end up doing problem transitions, nosing installs and even in some cases-a decent job on shoe molding.
I'm in this business so I suppose I take a lot for granted. If I were to need a tip on who to call, I'd ask around with associates in related fields that I trust know what looks good and what is done right. For instance-a good painter sees alot of finish and he's there many times after all are done.
If you go by an ad, you might be judging on fluff.
Well
I visited a few places today and have a guy coming over tomorrow to give me a quote. I asked both places I visited if their crews were subs or worked for them? They both said they were subs but worked only for them. So, that wasn't much help. I tried to ask about products. I was told by both places that the wear layer was mostly the same that all I was buying was thickness and style. Anyone out there care to let me now if this is true?
I wish I could ask neighbors who they recomend but I don't know of any neighbors that have laminant. Also, releatives live out of state. So no help there. I don't put much truth in the BBB as I had a very bad expereince with a carpet guy that was A+ rated at the BBB.
Thanks for the feedback guys .....
Its just fits the whole concept. Nice ideas!
