I have recently moved into a split foyer style home that is the farthest from my personal style as it can be. I would very much appreciate remodeling ideas, possibilities, words of wisdom, encouragement or condolescences of any kind! I am overwhelmed with ideas including trying to come up with an addition that would go across the entire 44ft. front of the house in order to change the look. It sits on 10+ acres of BEAUTIFUL farmland (including a pond and wooded areas). The current house does not fit the property. Please HELP. I am lost in the 70s.

What is a split foyer home? I've never heard of it.
Could you post a picture and what goals you'd like to achieve with the alterations?
Around here they call them multi-level homes. The front door takes you onto the landing at the middle of the stairs. Up goes to one group of rooms, down another. Not a real disability friendly home.
In the Northeast we call this a "raised ranch" or "split entry."
I have two resources for you that might help with renovation ideas. The first is a web site - http://www.split-level.com - that has a free, downloadable book called Split Visions: A planbook of remodeling ideas for split-level and split-entry houses. You can be the judge of whether they are successful in updating the look of split-level homes.
Another interesting thing about the site is that it asks these questions: what do you like about your split-level home? what do you dislike about your split-level home? what would you like to change about your split-level home? When you click through on the questions (right on the home page) you get to hundreds of postings where people discuss their split-level houses & what they've done to update them.
The second resource is an article from the Journal of Light Construction called Revising a Raised Ranch. Here it is in PDF form (you need Adobe Acrobat to read it).
Hope you find these useful.

Thank you so much! I will check out those sources.
