To stain or not to stain...

Hi,

When is the best time to apply a semi-transparent stain to a new pressure treated deck. I had a deck build 3 wks ago and was advised to leave it for a season before applying any stain to it.  If you ask me I think the sooner I protect the new wood with stain the better. What would you advise?
