I would like to put a Japanese style soaking tub, deeper then normal tubs. Designed so that you sit upright raher then laying down. Have had trouble finding any mfg’s that can supply this type of tub. If unable to find thinking of building my own and lining with ceramic tile. Need information on building such a tub.
Thanks

You are looking for an Ofuro, but you don't NEED to know that. Have you tried google on Japanese Soaking Tub?

Edited to add that these tubs are traditionally wood, not tile. Though if you are making it yourself you could use whatever material you want.

>> You are looking for an Ofuro ...
Also often spelled furo, without the leading 'o'.
Edited to add: Just trying to help with the search. Not at attempt to correct anyone's spelling.

Like Aimless said, these tubs are usually made from wood. If you decide to do it out of wood, probably someone from Knots could direct you to materials and plans. If out of ceramic, probably someone from Breaktime could help.
Try to find good clear port orford cedar or red cedar.
IMO, tile would remove most of the benefitrs of having one of these

Hello - Hey, we've been there, done that! We have a Japanese inspired master bath, and began our search by looking at wood ofuros, even visiting a couple of places where they are made. However, the price was very expensive and we were told they would most likely begin to leak in ten years, so we shifted our search to fiberglass or acrylic tubs. We wanted one that was deep enough and long enough for my husband to enjoy. He is 6' 4" tall. We wanted the water to come up to our shoulders, and we did not want a whirlpool (don't like the noise). We found the perfect tub for us. It is a Maax, Sidney soaking tub, acrylic, no jets. The only downside is that we could only get in white. This was about four years ago, so they may or may not still have this tub or a replacement. The tub is installed in a tile island, and I sit in it often, listening to soft music and watching the sun set over the hills, and enjoying the birds in the trees. I do not recommend this tub for anyone with mobility problems. But I have no trouble getting in or out right now. Good luck with your bath. A soaking tub is worth all the effort to make it a reality.
Here's a link to a source of fiberglass soaking tubs--a reader turned it up for me when she was looking for a tub similar to one we'd pictured in an article.

Hi Fish,
An ofuro is much like a non epoxied wooden boat, it is expected to "weep", so is not really waterproof.
I guess the ideal situation would be to have the ofuro in a bathroom
that has a drain in it. Or perhaps a section of a bathroom with the ofuro sitting
on stones inside a drain pan.
