I am framing my basement. Some exterior wall have a 12″ cement wall that I need to cover. One method is to build a 2×4 wall adjacent to it and then finish it with wall board and cap it with wood. The problem with that is that will result in a 9″ shelf that is only 12″ in height.
Another option is to use firing strips attached to the wall. The problem with that is when I use my nailer to nail the stip into the wall, the nail may stick out. Is this a show stopper? Or could I drill a hole in the wall board where the nail would be and fill the hold with compound?
I hope to hear your ideas! Thanks in advance.

You may want to post your questions at Breaktime (see "Other Taunton Sites" at top of this page). Those guys have pretty good answers. I would rent or buy a power nailer (uses a .22 blank cartridge to fire a hardened nail when you hit the device with a hammer) and nail the furring with that (maybe a little construction adhesive too). If a nail were to protrude, I don't see why you couldn't carve out a little hole in the back of the drywall. You could also glue Styrofoam to the wall between the furring strips if you need insulation and it would make a good backer for the drywall--then you could space the furring strips further apart--maybe 2' on-center.
