I’m finally going to have to decide, but first….maybe there’s something new? It’s a modern, 3-story chalet style house–half the roof is also the wall. Very dramatic, done in cedar shakes. The old cedar board siding must be replaced with something. My only choice so far has been sanded cedar shingles. But, how do I keep the place from looking like a gingerbread house?
The cedar will be quite expensive, plus the zillion feet of 1×4 lath, but this place looks cozy and welcoming with its grayed barn wood. Am I stuck with Hardie shingles? (This is not a “shingle style” home.) It’s sort of a cliff-hanger–rain gutter to the ground is about 45 feet, so painting is not a very viable option. Which leaves us with……?

needing some advice or thoughts on vinyl siding. Pros and cons on 3inch
to 6 inch siding.
I'm mostly on breaktime... but hardie is not that bad... you can stain it just like stain'n concrete and I'd guess leave it forever... nothing eats it.. it won't burn...

i started out with nothing.... and have most of it left
Ponytl:Thanks for the thought. I guess we'll keep pondering--last night my wife and I decided to "definitely" use cedar shingles. Went through those yellow pages pretty fast--I found a square and a half of 16" sanded shingles for only $270 per sq. ,and he was guessing that they weren't going to get any more. Ever. Looked around for cedar l&g; no 3/4" stuff--all 5/8 at best.Wish I could learn to love, or like, or even accept Hardie, but somehow it just clashes with the time I've spent learning to use hand planes and scrapers. I've got a small loft floor I made that's hand scraped; I'm afraid it would collapse if I ever took delivery of concrete, wood-looking siding. But then... I'm so old that on vacation I visit ruins as a professional courtesy.Butch
