Mold on shingles
I understand that putting bleach on roofing shingles isn't the best way to get rid of mold.
What is?

There are lots of techniques and cleaners specially developed just for that. If you do a Google search for "roof mold", "roof moss", "roof algae", and so forth there will be lots to read.
Zinc strips placed along the ridge line are effective as a preventive after the mold is gone. It helps to trim trees to get more sun and air circulation on the roof surface, too.
When you replace the roof you can purchase asphalt shingles with zinc oxide granules scattered in that will keep mold, algae, and moss from growing.
