Help in finding a fireplace surround

chrissie's picture

I want to add a mantle to my unadorned brick fireplace to provide a focal point for the room and to distract potential homebuyers from the long, steep, treacherous driveway!  I want it to be oak with a fairly deep mantle (10 -12 inches) and side supports.  I am planning on living in this house only 1-2 more years so don't want to spend a fortune and get the ultimate mantle that I would want in my next house where I plan to live forever!

About a year ago, I priced it with a local woodworker and it was $1500 with a 9-month lead time.  Things came up in that time and I found other, more pressing uses for my money.  I have since decided that I don't want to spend that much and want a simpler, Arts / Crafts design.  Any suggestions on where/how to get something more affordable or even websites with mantle / fireplace designs that I could bring to my woodworker (or send to my brother in MI who said he might make it and ship to me)?

Hmmm, you may want to google using the following:

Wood, Arts and Crafts mantel

Hopefully that should get you alot of hits.  If not that, then just try Arts and Crafts, the sub stuff under Arts/Crafts is enough to fill LOTS of books.

And you may also want to check out house demolitions and salvage yards.  They've usually got some great stuff at reasonable prices (tho in house demolitions you will have to take OUT the mantel).

That's a decent price for what you describe. I designed and built this one for just about that price several years ago. It has about a nine in projection.

There are many prebuilt ones for $300-500 available but they look cheap to me and they do not have more than a 6" projection

Thanks!  I really enjoyed seeing your mantle / fireplace surround.  While the price I was quoted may be decent, it was more than I wanted to spend since I am hoping to move out of this house in the next 2 years (bad driveway...just waiting for kids to go off to college), so I was hoping if I simplified the design, the price would go down.  I have a mocked up picture of  an arts & crafts mantle on my fireplace (thaks to a friends talents with Photoshop) that I just need to take to the woodworker to get an estimate.  Hopefully it will be cheaper...I was looking for something around 800 - $1000.
