What is this?
In my 25 year old home I have a brick fireplace which juts into the room. Around the corner from the fireplace is another opening (still brick). It is about 4 ft off the floor, 1-1/2 ft wide, 1-1/2 feet deep and 2 ft tall. It has it's own flue pipe, has an ash cleanout in the bottom and is lined with firebrick. There are 2 bricks jutting out from each side like they were meant to hold cooking racks. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Does it have a door? Sounds like a bake oven. You take coals out of the fireplace and put them in the bottom and close the door to bring it up to temp. Then shovel the ash out and throw in a loaf of bread to bake.

Thanks. That was my best guess, but since it is about 4 linear feet away around a corner with no hearth under it, I would just call it a bad design. Moving ashes from fireplace to oven would make a heck of a mess. There's no door. It looks like it was never quite finished or used (the flue pipe sticking out the top remains unfinished).

That's possible. I think it was also not uncommon to kindle a small hot flash fire inside the box, and insert the bread pan immediately after it flamed out. It takes technique and experinence to know just how much wood to use to heat the masonry enough to cook a loaf.
Since yours is around the corner, is it facing closer to the kitchen?

No, it's on the side away from the kitchen. I've attached a couple of pictures. The Duralogs were here when I moved in, don't be offended. I've never used one.

That doesn't look like a bake oven to me. Can't imagine what...
Sorry

At first it looked like a log storage place, but it sounds like it was originally meant to be something else given the flue. The only thing I've seen like this is in fact a log storage place, but no flues or ash cleanout area. Why not check the heat level - it might work well to warm up bread.
