Chris Whalen has worked in Missoula since 1974 as a carpenter, project manager and contractor. His finish carpentry has been featured in the local Parade of Homes since it’s beginning in 1990. He was the project manager for over 25 of the areas finest homes, including several award winning entries in the Parade of Homes. While working for old time builders Roy Rydquist and Russell Brooks as well as younger contractors, Chris honed his carpentry and woodworking skills and learned much about construction management. He is also a contributing writer for Fine Homebuilding magazine.
In 2005, after many years as a sub-contractor and superintendent, he formed Black Mountain Company where he combined his talents into a homebuilding, remodeling and woodworking business. The first project was an award winning remodel of an 1898 Queen Anne Victorian in the Rattlesnake Valley. This project showcased Chris’ talent for custom woodworking, cabinetry and finish carpentry, about which he wrote two articles for Fine Homebuilding Magazine. Next was a new timber-framed, energy efficient, structurally insulated panel (SIPS) house up Grant Creek. This was followed by a complete renovation and upgrade of an historic University area home and a total remodel and addition to an original cottage on South 6th Street West.
Building a new home in the lower Rattlesnake on a lot that was only 30 feet wide presented many interesting challenges for Black Mountain Company. With a 15 foot wide basement and two floors above it, the house and garage stretched for over 100 feet. In the end it became one of the most comfortable homes to live in that Chris has ever worked on. This was followed by a three storey addition to an owner-built home in the Philipsburg Valley, with sub-zero temps in the winter and beautiful, sunny days in the summer. He and the crew survived!
Though young in age, Black Mountain Company brings years of Chris’ experience and decades of others to each unique project. Give him a call and experience … the difference!
