Replace Furance with geothermal (post #205769)

craiginva's picture

Hi all!

I am new to this forum.

I have an older house with a rockwall cellar/basement..

The furnace is 19 years old.  It is propane and getting close to end of life.  The AC shares the same duct work.

2 questions but all input is welcome.

1.  Can a geolthermal unit be installed using the same ductwork.  I heard/read that it needs larger duct work.

Hello everyone,

I hope I am posting this in the correct section.

It’s 1975 and If you could have seen into the future…. (post #205758)

My home is 2-story (1975 Zone 3) with a hipped roof that makes up 1/3 of the ceiling/wall of the 2ndfloor.

On the North side of the house, 2ndfloor, there are 2 storage closets (triangle shaped) with the roof being the outer wall. These closets are insulated (both inner and outer wall) and covered with unfinished drywall, but the difference between the outside and inside temperature isn’t much. I want to improve the insulation but am unsure of the best way.

Natural Gas Wall Heater - heats in both directions? (post #205733)

Moving an OLD wall heater from inside an exterior wall to against the bathroom wall.  Can i allow some of the heat to radiate toward the wall (behind) the heater?  Perhaps with a metal panel to protect it but not insulate it.

Vapour barrier conundrum (post #205720)

in the living room of our house, we have ceiling joists that are 24 inches OC and span 20 feet. The ceiling is only 7 1/2 feet high. In order to make the ceiling look higher, I would like to inset  T&G pine 4-6 inches within those joists. Because of the span and the weight of whatever goes on the ceiling, the ceiling joists will have to be tied in vertically with the roof joists.

All Borate Cellulose Insulation (post #205711)

I just finished thoroughly sealing my attic and am about to blow-in a thick layer of celluslose insulation. After reading a bit I've decided I don't to use cellulose with ammonium sulfate in it as it can become corrosive if it gets wet. However, I am unable to find any all borate cellulose that is sold for DIY installation. Is it true that the all borate stuff is only available with professional installation? Is it that different to install?

Condensation issue (post #205707)

I live in the humid south and we have been renovation our house to be more energy efficient. We added a full length ridge vent to our roof when it was reshingled. When we replaced the HVAC units, the freon line started dripping condensation onto the living room ceiling. The HVAC guy came back and said that we needed to increase the insulation around the pipe. So we added additional insulation to the attic (according to his recommendation) and the problem has only gotten worse. Any ideas on fixing this? The freon line is already wrapped with self sealing rubber pipe insulation.

Pardon the interruption, but if it wasn't for people like YOU (and the work crews of 50 years ago) I wouldn't have such fine examples on the shelves of my "man cave" You see, I have a tolerant wife that allows my dedicated "beer room"

Replace existing Siding and add Foam Board Insulation (post #205672)

retired7111's picture

I recently purchased a 1986 modular home in Frisco, North Carolina.  The house has the original T1-11 sheathing that is beginning to deteriorate, with 3.5" of fiberglass insulation.  The inside finished walls are paneling that we are priming and painting.  I want to remove the existing exterior siding and install 1" of foam sheathing, cover that with 1/2"  Zip sheathing and then install new windows and the new siding,  cement board shingles with SS nails.  Am I missing anything?  Thank you.
