Stripping the last bit of wood

BigMish's picture

I’ve removed most of the paint from my stairs using paint stripper. There is now just a sicky-gunky residue that I can’t remove. I’ve tried:

  • Adding more paint remover and scraping it of: I can’t help but leave behind a bit of the gunk
  • Rubbing out with paint thinner on steel wool: this just doesn’t do any thing
  • Sandpaper, this moves the gunk a bit but don’t remove it

How can I get this last bit off?!

Thanks, M

There's a couple of suppliers of paint/varnish remover that is not the paste style caustic stuff.  This is to be applied by rubbing  on with steel wool.  Homer Formby had something.  If necessary I'll go to the shop and see if I have a partial can and give you the label info.

I have used other stuff, like lacquer thinner, denat. alcohol, naptha.......

but the combo chemicals in those refinishing products is a bit better/easier.

You dip the steel wool in a bowl with the stuff.

wring it out a bit-rub-rewet and wring......repeat until the residue is miraculously removed.

KleenStrip-Kleen Kutter Remover

(of course I couldn't remember the spelling of the can by the time I got back here.  But if not KLEEN, then try Klean.......I know the K's are right!

That's the can that's in the cabinet now.  Have used fornby's-same type of stuff.  For fine furniture-works well with varnish-I'd try it.

Hope it works for you.
